Pakistan Biotechnology Information Center (PABIC) arranged a workshop entitled; “Modern Agriculture Technologies” in collaboration with Monsanto Pakistan Private Limited, on Thursday, 26th March,2015 at Library of the Southern Agricultural Research Center, Karachi. The seminar was chaired by Dr. Mubarak Ahmed, Director General SARC and Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director PABIC as Guest of honor and key speakers. The event was attended by prominent members of academia, and scientists. Monsanto is a sustainable agriculture company, works alongside farmers, academics and society and find solutions to make agriculture more sustainable, said Mr. Murtaza Quddusi in his opening remarks.
Mr. M. Asim (Monsanto Pakistan’s Regulatory affairs) demonstrated in detail about the “Monsanto pipelines technologies” in his presentation. While elaborating he said: “The world population is predictable to reach 9.6 billion people by 2050. Farmers will need access to tools and technologies to help themselves feed the world. That’s why we like to call our pipeline update “a window into agriculture’s future,” because Monsanto researchers are working on solutions for farmers that can have an influence in the near-term and long-term. Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director PABIC deliver his lecture entitled, “Global Biotechnology Scenario-Where we stand?” He reminds the participants that most of the developing nations are the net importer of food commodities. He said that despite the fact that Pakistan is among three Muslim countries, out of 57 nations, who have achieved commercialization of biotech crops, food inflation is still among the highest in Pakistan. Therefore, it is the need of time to adopt the agriculture biotechnology at the national level in order to meet the constantly growing food demands in Pakistan. He presented a brief synopsis of the ISAAA Brief 49 and PABIC activities for the promotion of biotechnology in Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Saifullah Khan Rao, Agriculture & Agri-Business Management, University of Karachi has talked about the “Myths & Realities of Biotech Crops” in detail. He discussed the need for genetically modified crops and plant tissue culture for the betterment of agriculture in Pakistan. His presentation triggered a spirited discussion on organic farming versus genetically modified food products. The seminar ended off with the speech of Dr. Mubarak Ahmed, Director General SARC.
