The launching ceremony of ISAAA Brief 52 was organized by the Pakistan Biotechnology Information Center (PABIC) in collaboration with International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (ICCBS) at the occasion of inauguration of SINO-Pak Hybrid Rice Research Center at ICCBS, University of Karachi on Wednesday, July 26, 2017. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ajmal Khan and Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman jointly launched 52nd annual report of the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA).
Director PABIC, Prof. M. Iqbal Choudhary brief the audience about the 110-fold increase in the adoption rate of biotech crops globally in just 21 years of commercialization – growing from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to 185.1 million hectares in 2016. In the launch, Prof. Iqbal Choudhary informed the participants about the chapter on Pakistan and told that according to this report, Pakistan has become the seventh largest biotech country in the world.
While addressing the audience Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, said that Pakistan has 100 million young people (below the age of 20) in her total population, which needs to be educated and trained. He emphasizes the need of swift implementation of agri-biotech applications in Pakistan in order to meet the food, fodder and fiber needs for the growing population.
The ceremony was also attended by His Excellency Wang Yu, Consul General of China in Karachi and six member delegation of Chinese National Rice Research Center (CNRRI), Hangzhou – China, comprises of Prof. Dr. Cheng Shihua, Director General CNRRI, Prof. Dr. Zhuang Jieyun, Deputy-Director CNRRI, Prof. Dr. Wu Jianli, Dr. Wang Kejian, Professor, Dr. LuoJu, and Dr. ZhengYouchuan.
