“The Development of Agricultural Biotechnology in Islamic Countries: Sharing the Experience on Issues and Challenges

 

6th to 8th March, 2006 Cairo , Egypt

 

The Biotechnology Information Centres (BICs) of Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Bangladesh, and Pakistan together with the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA) and The Inter-Islamic Network on Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (INOGEB) are organizing a workshop in Cairo, Egypt to bring together scientists, policy makers, and religious authorities to discuss the developments of agricultural biotechnology in some selected Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) countries. The workshop is funded by ISAAA, Islamic Development Bank (IDB), COMSTECH, Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and INOGEB.

The workshop will be attended by approximately 60 delegates from Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines, Algeria, Cameroon, Morocco, Kuwait, Senegal, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Jordan, Bahrain, Togo, Chad, Burkino Faso, Iran and Tunisia. The topics that will be covered include: developments of agriculture biotechnology in the participating countries, government policies on biotechnology, Islamic perspective on biotechnology, capacity building, issues and challenges, collaboration possibilities , and achievements and past experience .
