Introduction:
The Pakistan Biotechnology Information Center (PABIC) was established in January 2006. The main focus of the PABIC is to create awareness about biotechnology at local and international levels. Seminars, workshops and field visits are organized in collaboration with other organizations to create public awareness and to inform stakeholders of the current issues in biotechnology .Our stakeholders include:ScientistsAcademiaIndustriesFarmersStudentsMembers of the media
The Rationale:
Agriculture is the key economic sector in most developing countries. This sector has evolved tremendously in the recent years through biotechnological applications. Research in agricultural biotechnology, in particular work on genetic modification (GM) has been greatly emphasized in many developing countries. This is mainly due to the fact that the need for biotech crops has been realized and its potential benefits accepted. Although the level of acceptance of biotech crops is on the rise, these crops are still being the target of constant criticism and skepticism. We hope through this workshop, the issues related to biotech crops, e.g. the safety, the need, challenges, potential, and concerns will addressed to Scientists, journalists, farmers and industrialist to enlighten them. This workshop will also attempt to showcase the developments of GM technology in Pakistan and how public sectors in developing countries could take a leading role in this area.
