Medicinal Plant Biotechnology
“Towards Molecular Treatment of Diseases”
Public Seminar
Date: 25th March 2008
Venue: Monash University Malaysia, Sunway Campus
Time: 12.00 noon – 1.00 pm
The herbal industry is receiving a renewed interest not only locally but also at the global scene.A number of products from medicinal plants have emerged successful in recent years to
highlight the importance of medicinal plants to the development of modern medicine.
Malaysia, as a country blessed with rich biodiversity has the competitive edge in this
area over many countries provided we have strong research work in prioritized area to
transform our herbal industry in into a world class industry.
Prof. Choudhary will present on the recent developments in the
biotechnology and chemistry of the medicinal plants along with the
presentation of some of the results of research work carried out at Dr.
Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research,
University of Karachi, Pakistan. This includes the centre’s efforts to use
medicinal plant cell suspension cultures for the structural transformations
of chemical compounds, development of rapid dereplication techniques for
medicinal plant chemistry, etc. The seminar will also reveal the revival of
medicinal plant products globally and its potential in drug development.
We hope through this seminar, local scientists and companies involved in the herbal
industry could exchange notes with Prof. Choudhary and share his experience and
