"Research in transgenics, forensics stressed "
September 02, 2008): The departments of livestock production and molecular biology and biotechnology of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences on Tuesday arranged a national workshop on “Techniques in transgenics.” Vice-chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz chaired the inaugural session of the workshop, which was participated in by scientists from Balochistan, the NWFP, Sindh, Punjab and Azad Kashmir.
Speaking on the occasion, the VC said the 21st century was the century of molecular biology and biotechnology. He said transgenics was a vast field and the UVAS was already conducting DNA tests of animals. He said the university scientists/professors were keeping pace with modern technologies and were actively involved in research in the area of transgenics and forensics.
Later, Indianapolis Police, USA, Forensic Training Programme director Prof Dr Ashraf Tahir delivered a lecture on “Forensics and its application.” In two technical sessions of the workshop, Prof Dr Masroor Elahi Babar spoke on the subject ‘Transgenic: the science of future’; Prof Dr Abdul Waheed on ‘Transgenic techniques’; Muhammad Imran on ‘Ethical and legal issues in transgenics’; Prof Dr Irshad Husain on ‘Transgenics and knockout’ and Dr Moeenuddin on ‘Practical problems in transgenics’.
The VC also chaired the closing ceremony in the evening and distributed certificates among the participants.
WORKSHOP: The UVAS institute of continuing education and extension arranged a certificate distribution ceremony for the participants of an eight-day training workshop on “Introduction to laboratory instrumentation.” VC Prof Nawaz and veterinary sciences dean Prof Dr Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry distributed certificates among the participants.
Faculty members and researchers from the Punjab University, University of Health Sciences and UVAS participated in the workshop.
The main purpose of the workshop was to introduce the participants to advanced instruments, documentation, working principles, parts, maintenance, servicing, etc.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Nawaz urged the participants to learn more about instrumentation and work for progress of the country.
Prof Dr Zafar Iqbal Chaudhry spoke about the training and extension programmes of the institute.
