"Farmers to cultivate high yielding cotton"


ISLAMABAD (January 17 2009): The farmers in the country will cultivate a high yielding variety BT cotton next year with co-operation of American company Monsento. Talking to a private TV channel, Advisor to Prime Minister on Textile Mirza Ikhtiar Baig said this year Monsento cultivated high yielding BT cotton on experimental base. He said there are ongoing negotiations with other companies to cultivate BT cotton in Pakistan.

The cotton variety Monsento has already been introduced in other countries and the results were encouraging. He said the textile industry is playing a major contribution in the development of the national economy and the government is planning many new measures to further improve the performance of the sector.
